A Spaceship in the Desert

May 23 2011

Masdar City is one big laboratory for the future city. Situated close to Abu Dhabi, this creation by Norman Foster is aimed to be completely sustainable and energy-neutral. The Guardian wonders whether this 17 billion-dollar project, with its electric cars and wind towers, is the right model for the sustainable city of the future. Laura Stupin, an American studying at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology in Abu Dhabi, is one of the city’s first inhabitants. She tells about her experiences on her blog, Rants and Rambles.

“The first day felt like culture shock.  The buildings are beautiful here, and they look so different from anything I’ve ever seen, anywhere.  My brain really struggled to believe what it was seeing.  Is this real?  What reality am I in?”
